The shame of a sandwich

Care Bears On Fire, a Brooklyn-based band comprised of three high school girls, would like Barbie to eat a sandwich, and have said as much in this punky tune, which is making its controversial way across the ladyblognet00bz.

Feministing and Broadsheet both celebrate the video as a mouthy, post-post riotgrrl anthem. Blog commenters, however, are divided and even hostile.
A couple Broadsheet posters note that the girls are, themselves, attractive and thin, while Feministing commenter Courtroom_Mama says, "Aww cute. But here's an idea for their next song "Everyone, stop fucking telling women what to eat or not eat." I'm inclined to agree. The song may be empowering, but it's also reinforcing a message women are tired of hearing: that their bodies, and what their bodies look like to others, is a point of major concern.

I think it's great that teenage girls are taking on body image issues and gender stereotyping, especially through rocking out. And I think in a few years, it's possible they'll see telling someone to eat a sandwich as body-shaming, too. I don't know that we need to get all worked up over some still-developing teenaged girlpower, but I definitely think it's an opportunity to talk about developing a feminist consciousness and the diversity of opinions in the feminist community.

And make that sandwich a toasted turkey with some oozy fontina, roasted red peppers plus a layer of carmalized onions on focaccia, spread over with a fat plop of homemade mayo. And make it snappy, Daddy-O!

They really make me think of Josie and the Pussycats if anyone ever saw that movie. I used to know the name of the actual band who performed the music, but I don't think their stuff sounded like the songs in the movie. So I guess they sound like a real life Josie and the Pussycats to me, lol. :P

I love the video.
I do agree that reinforces the same old message, but I think It does it in a really fun way.
