We all know what happened with the whole Rihanna-Chris Brown debacle earlier this year (in case you live under a rock, he physically assaulted her before the Grammy Awards), and it wasn't clear when or how Rihanna would come back in the spotlight after enduring abuse.
Her latest single, "Russian Roulette," was released last month and the pop star is poised for another hit album as her fourth CD, Rated R, debuts November 23.
In the song, she sings, "And you can see my heart beating, you can see it through my chest. Said I'm terrified, but I'm not leaving, I know that I must pass this test."
Her lyrics are raw and honest. She may be saying it was hard to let go of Brown, a man she loved, even though he hurt her immensely. Or she might be telling listeners that no matter what hardship she goes through, she'll perservere and come out on top. The song's already topped the iTunes chart, showing Rihanna's still going strong.
The video is as gut-wrenching as the lyrics, showing Rihanna experiencing several near-death experiences. Knowing what happened to her this year makes it almost painful to watch, but the video was another way for her to channel her emotions instead of simply talking trash about Brown. With this song, Rihanna took a painful experience and turned it into art that could affect anyone.
