Chicks Aren't Funny: Is laughing at moms hateful?

Is this arguably hilarious Onion video about the Baby Safe Ball, which "keeps your baby safe no matter how hard you shake him or her," a symptom of what Lynn Harris in Salon calls our mommy-hating culture? Or is this merely some silly mommy-comedy?

New BabySafe Ball Makes Shaking Your Infant Guilt And Injury Free

I stopped myself laughing once I replaced "baby" with "kitten" in my mind (alas, I have slightly more sympathy for most pets than most kids). But the thought of acknowledging that even the most loving parent gets incredibly frustrated with their kids remains amusing. Most of us certainly don't shake our babies--or our cats, when they pee on the rug, I'm looking at you, Sake--but can't we laugh about the awful sides of "beautiful" things like parenthood, too?

I find parenthood beautiful and actualy think it has no "awful" sides but I'm always willing to laugh at its funny aspects and admit that newm moms (me included) often behave themselves in a funny and sometimes annoying and exaggerated way. But I think this ad is sad and not funny at all. Unfortunately the problem of domestic violence towards the newborns exist and there's nothing to laugh at.

It was pretty funny until they let the female cohost have a go at it- then I completely lost it.

Crimson Wife posted this on another blog and I think it's something that Andrea needs to think about:

"Not every woman is called to be a mother. Those of us who are deserve more respect than we currently get from society. But we also need to give more respect to women who recognize that motherhood isn’t for them."

Oh, and that ad? Not funny. At all. Go visit some babies who have been shaken and THEN try laughing.

I missed this one on the Onion. Normally, I love their anti-kid stuff (search out their Halloween special about "manning up your girly boy"), so I readily clicked the vid to watch... but I have to admit - this one made me cringe.
