Ads gone bad: We can't get behind this

Hey, we've all been there: a hot girl is just talking and talking and talking and she just will not shut up while you're trying to ogle her ass.
Men are so silly! Always staring at my ass when I'm trying to talk! It's adorable--not my ass, though it is pretty great--when they leer at me! Sometimes I have to clear my throat and smile at them to get them to stop. Being reduced to a body part is so silly and fun and in no way demeans me as a woman. Besides chocolate and shoes, there is literally nothing women love more than being stared at by men.

Good god, wow. The video is even flagged as inappropriate on Youtube. And there are multiple commercials for this line of shoes! One that promises to "make your boobs jealous of your butt." Yiiiikes.

I'm typing while I nap, if that explains anything.
Posted 11/02/2009 at 02:37:30 PMSo, this is clearly not a "pro-feminism" ad, but All types of people do want to be considered attractive/sexy, at least, at times- the whole "and everyone turned their heads in her/his direction" thing. Obviously, that's not the end-all/be-all for LIFE, but then how Should/Could ads cater to those desires (and the products that are supportive of such things- I think that includes any article of clothing that you think is "flattering" to your body) without relating to the (I would argue) desired result? That is, "Attention to [my] Physical Beauty"?
I guess one way would be to take the "man-cam" out of the commercial equation, and just have the woman self-appraise? That sounds like it could be just as misogynisitc... any (much better) ideas? This is assuming that "selling" physical attractiveness isn't entirely horrible.
The commercial doesn't really say anything along the lines of "Buy this and only this, to be considered Worthy of anything!", and the product is designed (or designed to be sold as) something to make your butt and legs look better... so to argue that it entirely reduces the woman to her butt kind of misses the point, no? The point being that, "This product will make your butt look so good, it's literally distracting." The point Not being, "Only with such a distracting butt, will you get/be worthy of attention", because that's just not what's happening in the ad.
...no?
Posted 11/02/2009 at 03:55:32 PMI am no prude but I absolutely hate both commercials that I've seen so far. Makes me uncomfortable to say the least when watching TV with my 10 yr old daughter and 12 yr old son! Ridiculous!
Posted 11/08/2009 at 01:45:36 PMSelling physical attractiveness isn't necessarily evil. Selling a product by implying that the consumer's physical attractiveness isn't up to par, that's a different matter.
