Bleeding gets its own blog
Posted at 12:38 PM Sep 16, 2009
By Andrea GrimesNo, it's not a blog with regard to bicycling, but the official blog of the Society for Menstrual Cycle Research. I wonder if 12 years of bleeding from my crotch every month qualifies me for membership? Though my fieldwork data would be largely anecdotal, and it would include that one mortifying time in high school when my boyfriend found an aging and un-flushed floating tampon in my toilet.
Re: Cycling--oh sweet mother of Tampax, can we change that name?--features a red-ribbon award for media that portray menstruating women as something more than bitchy and they even linked to our very own article on the maxi-pad shelving unit. (Confidential to re: Cycling blogger Elizabeth Kissling: I love the maxi pad table! You misread! DO WANT.)
The SMCR was founded back in the 70's and has just now gotten around to starting a blog. So it's a big panty-party about ladythings, right? Not so! They're doing science!
The Society for Menstrual Cycle Research, a nonprofit organization, was founded in 1977 by a multidisciplinary group of women who were pioneers in understanding the centrality of menstrual cycle research to women's health. We are an interdisciplinary group of researchers, health care providers, policy makers, and students who share an interest in women's lives and health needs as they are related to the menstrual cycle.I love that they say "the menstrual cycle" as opposed to "their menstrual cycles" or "women's menstrual cycles," making it a kind of shadowy, corporate entity hell-bent on ensuring several days of pain and suffering every month. From now on, I'm going to say that I'm having The Period and that The Cramps hurt. Having a bad day? Blame it on The Menstrual Cycle. Still, if you have The Menstrual Cycle, at least that means you're not The Pregnant.

If they said "their menstrual cycle", would you have zinged them for implying that the SMCR is comprised only of men - and therefore "their menstrual cycle", perhaps...?

Posted 01/12/2010 at 12:13:58 PMGreat blog , You really hit the
mark with this, I just don't understand why people quite get what you're saying.
I don't know how many individuals I've talked to concerning this very
thing in the past few days, and they just can't get it.
Now in the future I won't have to argue aimlessly with people about this, I'll just have to send them copy of
to your page.
, Excellent post!
