Can't quit smoking? It's because you're a lady.

There's nothing like moving to New York City to make you re-think smoking. Of course, smoking taxes have gone up all over the place, but the price of a pack 'o cancer is nigh exorbitant in this city. Ten, eleven, twelve dollars for slow suicide? I'm ashamed to say I've sailed on that ship once or twice. But now I can blame science for my social smoking tendencies: it's harder for me to quit, 'cause I'm a lady!

According to researchers at Yale cited today in the Hartford Courant, smoking cessation is different and more difficult for women. According to one researcher:

" ... we find women are more likely to use cigarettes to manage moods, to deal with stress and to control weight. In other words, women are smoking for different reasons, and if you're not helping with those particular reasons for smoking in your cessation treatment, you wouldn't necessarily expect your treatment to work."
Apart from the weight control, which I don't hear a lot of guy smokers vocalizing but would nonetheless not be surprised to find is true, aren't those reasons men smoke, too? Stress, moods, etc? But the study seems to suggest that men smoke mainly because they're physically addicted, since cessation techniques that address biological needs tend to work better on them:

"A good example is the nicotine patch, which often is considered the first line of treatment for smoking. The research data on the nicotine patch suggest that women do less well quitting smoking when using the patch than men do, probably because it targets symptoms of craving rather than the symptoms that are more prominent for women."
Of course, a lady health story wouldn't be complete without a reference to ole' Aunt Flo. The ole' Crimson Wave. That time o' the month. The High Red Tide ... you get the picture:

"We tell women to think about the time within their menstrual cycle that is most difficult personally and advise them not to quit during that time because you are likely to have a harder time resisting cigarettes during that time. In addition, before you quit, prepare for that time in your cycle."
I can see Aunt Flo coming now! Better light one up.

Smoking is an adult pacifier. Men and women don't get enough oral satisfaction. Women are afraid if they were to indulge themselves performing oral sex, that ppl would think them sluts. Also they don't want to ask for more oral sex so ppl go without.

Um, Sorry Grumpy, I completely disagree. I love smoking and I love to give oral sex. If quitting smoking was as easy as giving a BJ, I would have quit a long time ago.
