Ads gone bad: when meat is, quite literally, murder

You know, sometimes I'm hanging out, watching my lady do her sexy dance, and I'm like, hey wait, is that a lady, or is that a delicious fish I'd like to gut alive and eat?
It's an ad for a Dutch non-profit organization called Animals Awake, which campaigns against gutting fish while they're still alive.
Why is it that objectifying women and animal rights are always skipping down the sidewalk merrily together, whistling and high-fiving and talking about making a nice risotto for dinner? Even if you don't want to bother getting offended about equating a lady to a tasty fish, maybe you can get behind having a problem with equating killing a human being and killing sea creatures.
If you're going to go for shock value and show people why they should really, really care about the suffering fish (and no doubt the fish do suffer, and it's terrible) why not just show the awful fish death? Guess that wouldn't be sexy, though.

Posted 06/30/2009 at 02:57:58 PMWOW ... I was not adequately prepared for that.
Posted 06/30/2009 at 03:15:17 PMFuck. this.
Violence against women is soooo sexy. (not)
Posted 07/01/2009 at 03:30:07 PMI recently saw this for the first time and I can't begin to tell you how utterly disturbing and vile I find this ad. And not in the way the advertisers intended.
It's like, wow, thanks for making me watch you disembowel a topless, barely dressed woman on stage in the most violent and emotionally distressing manner.
And hey, the fact that it reeks of sexual violence due to the prior context -- well, that just makes it even better. Yep. Then take all of that and compare the woman to a fish, because that's in no way insulting or dismissive to what we just witnessed, or to women in general. Then go a step further by making light of violence against women and rape by creating a setup that suggests that those acts are on the same level as fish stripping. Oh, and to top it all off, let's use a stripper because you know, it's a funny pun on stripping practices. Because watching a women get violently attacked is funny. Oh yeah, that's all just awesome.
Jeebus, who was on the ad team? Ted Bundy and Patrick Bateman? I feel like someone ought to give them all psychological evaluations.
Posted 01/09/2010 at 10:34:50 PMUnrelated to the fact that she's a stripper and she's getting beaten to death, it's very nice to see that she's got (at least somewhat) more of a realistic body than many women in advertisements. She has physical substance! Small victories.
