Keeping hate alive, one adorable animal at a time

Precisely where and when it started becoming okay to act like a degenerate, misogynistic jerk on the intert00bs, I'm not clear. Maybe trollery has been part of the wonder of the t00bs since its inception. But at no time has it appeared to be more popular than now, what with asshattery in full swing at places like Perez Hilton, the Superficial, DListed, and etc., and ad nauseam, and what have you, and such. The formula is easy: call someone fat, talk about your penis, insert a non-sequitur. Rinse, repeat.

Last week, the Guardian ran a little romp through online hate, featuring sites dedicated to the perceived suckery of Sarah Jessica Parker, Coldplay, Bono and more. But somehow they missed the ridiculous self-righteousness of FuckYouPenguin, wherein a very angry anonymous gives adorable animals serious talkings-to. Or, as the blog tagline says, "A blog where I tell cute animals what's what."

I am prepared to dig this, not because I think cute animals deserve a verbal smackdown, but because they so obviously don't--just like most of the celebs who are unfairly targeted by trolly, basement-dwelling-pajama-wearing bloggers. Which is what I really, really hope FUPenguin is getting at. Or maybe they really have something against another one of my favorite blogs, CuteOverload. In any case, I'm sure of one thing: the cuteness abides, and you can neither smother it with moishenesscuteseyproshwootseyness or your depraved cynicism.

I read the superficial and dlisted all the time and yes, they make me groan or mouth drop at times but usually they have me laughing out loud. The Superficial writer's talk about his bulging muscles and his sexual abilities are hilarious.

There's a certain point where the more benign the thing is the funnier the hate is. Like obscure presidents. Visceral hatred directed to Warren G Harding or Taft is automatic comedy gold.
