10 Facebook Friends I'm Embarrassed to Have

Facebook is a place for you to keep up with your buddies. It's also a place for you to begrudgingly tolerate staying in touch with people you dislike -- or you're amazed even know how to use the Internet. Here's who makes me shake my head in quiet embarrassment when I skim my own friends list:

10. My mother

It's bad enough my mom calls four times a day from the East Coast to put me on the phone with our cats (seriously). Now she watches my every status update. No, mother dearest, you don't need to know that I'm headed out for margaritas at 4:45 in the afternoon.

9. My roommate's mother

Sure, she's a sweet lady, but her smiling, middle-aged face just looks so out of place lined up with all the profile pics of my twenty-something comrades-in-goofiness, hanging on their significant others or waving their arms in front of an international monument. It's like watching someone accidentally stumble into the wrong party.

8. My fiancé's parents

Even worse than my mother hanging around my online social circle is my soon-to-be-husband's mother. How can I possibly keep up my "lovely addition to the family" image? Three time zones away and my in-laws still know everything I'm doing.

7. My fiancé's parents' friends

Yes, that is my bedmate's father's old buddy who posted on my wall yesterday. Yes, he has a grey beard. No, I don't feel extremely awkward. Why would you ask that?

6. That boy whose profile pic is a photo of his two-year-old son

Good for this guy for accepting responsibility when he got his college girlfriend pregnant and dropping out of school to take care of her and the baby -- I guess. Sure, he's two years younger than me. Sure, he looks small enough to be the kid's older brother. But he... Okay, it just makes me feel weird.

Hey! Can I be your friend on Facebook? I have only 8 friends so you're not alone:)
