Second Life Movie = Worst Idea Ever
Posted at 7:50 PM Dec 18, 2008
By Bonnie RubergThe director of Pirates of the Caribbean is planning Second Life: The Movie. Too late! The lonely virtual world lost its buzz two years ago. Why is Hollywood always so behind the times?ValleyWag comes up with many potential problems with the virtual world heading to the big screen -- apart from, as anyone who's spent a lot of time in Second Life could predict, its general lameness. Granted, an overweight protagonist getting sucked into a porn-filled online sex den doesn't sound nearly as catchy as Johnny Depp roaming the high seas. Still, if they could turn Pirates of the Caribbean into something I actually enjoy watching...The movie business has always been late to catch on to trends. But the swift shifts of technology make the studios' sluggishness all the more embarrassing.
Universal and Pirates director Gore Verbinski have acquired rights to make a movie from a Wall Street Journal article written in 2007 about a woman virtually widowed by her husband's Second Life addiction.

Pity that the movie is promising to be the complete waste of time and money. Virtual worlds are interesting phenomenon, once people realize they are much more than cybersex and guys getting in trouble with redhead avatars. But Hollywood thinks that kind of drama will bring money. We'll see.
Posted 12/19/2008 at 07:24:21 AMThe wave of newbies looking for sex will be 100 times worse than when stuff like that is in the news. Please, tell me this is a joke. There are some decent Pirate avatars but the comparison ends there. What is next? A Second Life ride at Disney?
Posted 12/19/2008 at 09:08:47 PMPh dear, to think Linden Lab want to make SL more business-savvy. This won't help at all with SL's reputation.
Posted 12/19/2008 at 10:51:08 PMOh, no. No no no, this is just not good! Teagan, how did you even find this? I don't even have words!
*sighs* You do realize this will make the noobs even more now embarassing, right? Hprrible- now they're going to think this is a good idea!
Posted 12/20/2008 at 12:31:30 AMIn order to make it interesting enough, they will have to animate it way beyond what SL really is like they did on CSI. This will lead to a bunch of new people expecting the game to be that way when it really isn't.
Posted 12/20/2008 at 10:45:51 PMTrue, Teagan ... but once they log in and see how things ACTUALLY work on the grid, how long do you think they'll stay? Optimistically, I'd like to think the flood of n00bs would first notice the glaring difference between the interface they're shown in 'SL:The Movie' and the actual client ... which would maybe give them pause about the pre-conceived views they've gotten from the Hollywood interpretation. Maybe it'll remind them that the things that Hollywood shows them are as much 'real life' as the virtual lives we live here on the grid ... which would lead them to wonder what ELSE has been mis-interpreted ... which would invite them to truly explore SL and it's possibilities. See where I'm goin' with this? More open-minded people with their eyes truly open = new ideas and a richer virtual world.
But hell ... realistically, they'll probably just make straight for the free sex clubs. I guess SOMEone's got to keep the 'Freenis' industry in business, right?
Posted 12/22/2008 at 06:53:50 AMI'm hoping they were partially inspired by my Five Possible Hollywood Plots based on Social Media post.
I'm sure there are far more interesting addictions out there that could've broken down marriages? Have they all been done!?
