Hillary named secretary of state, pantsuit lovers vindicated

2006_04_13_Chicago_Speech.jpgAs a female democrat, I'm not sure how I'm supposed to feel about the recent announcement that Obama is indeed naming Hillary Clinton as secretary of state. Sure, it's great that Clinton, having lost the democratic presidential candidacy, will still be handed a position of serious power in the new White House. Then again, this announcement reminds us women -- because the media tells us all women are die-hard Hillary supporters, right? -- how she was shunned the first time around. Oh, the sting.

Honestly though, I'm psyched to see that an intelligent, hard-working woman like Hillary will have a role to play over the next four years. I'm also psyched that Obama is surrounding himself with combative smarties, instead of yes men. Ah yes, and I'm psyched that this will not be the end of pantsuits, since Clinton will obviously still be in the public eye as secretary of state. To be fair, I was never a crazy-for-Hillary girl. Back at the time of the democratic primaries, I was living in France -- where it was hard enough to explain the differences between the two candidates, let alone the race/gender politics between them. I was perfectly happy -- okay, downright thrilled -- to see Obama elected, so maybe I'm not the most accurate source on this one.

Thoughts, dolls?
