Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers Gets Serious About Ovulation

By Jennifer MathieuThe headline for this post has got to be the weirdest one I have ever written in my 10 plus years of working as a professional writer, but it's hand-to-Goddess totally true.
Some of you dolls out there who are curious about hormone-free birth control may have heard about Cyclebeads, a sort of necklace of colored beads that makes tracking your fertile days pretty simple. (The secret is to avoid gettin' busy when you're on the "white beads" unless you're itching to hear the pitter patter of little feet.)
At any rate, while reading about the beads on the company's website, I discovered that Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers had promoted the birth control product when he visited rural Haitian health clinics as a goodwill ambassador for the Haitian Health Foundation. I sat, stunned, as I watched the clip below in which Flea calmly discusses a woman's period, the "baby zone" and smiles as he suggests "showing a little restraint" during ovulation.
Now, I remember back in the day when I mostly thought of Flea as a kooky bassist who liked to wear pants made of stuffed animals. I mean, I thought he was talented and cute and everything, but now...
What I'm saying is, is it weird that this actually makes Flea seem even more attractive than he did before? A man so at ease when discussing a woman's cycle (and knowledgeable about that cycle, too!) is of course so much more appealing than a man who refers opaquely to "that time of the month" and knows little to nothing about how a woman's body works. (Like this dude I knew in college who believed that all women all over the globe got their periods at the exact same time. Yes, I'm serious!)
Anyway, I'm touched that Flea would do this kind of humanitarian work, and I'm impressed that he knows so much about this topic. Quite a step up from the stuffed animal pants! (Although those were pretty groovy too.)
