Melissa Etheridge: no wedding bells, no taxes

Tina Brown just can't stop founding things, so you may as well put her month-old news aggregator The Daily Beast into your bookmarks before she starts a skin care line and donates cash to a soon-to-be eponymous journalism department somewhere. Straddling the line between smart-ish pop culture snark and political wonkage, TDB guest blogger Melissa Etheridge today tells the Californians who recently denied gays the right to marry:
"I am taking that to mean I do not have to pay my state taxes because I am not a full citizen. I mean that would just be wrong, to make someone pay taxes and not give them the same rights, sounds sort of like that taxation without representation thing from the history books."A righteous snap, indeed. It's lyric time! Sing "Forget My Taxes" in the style of Etheridge's "Come To My Window." I hope I've done the over-dramatic nature of the original justice.
"Forget My Taxes"
Forget my taxes
I won't file, keepin' my pile
of cash at home
Forget my taxes
1040 all gone
I will count the cash i'll keep
and i'll run out of breath
if you tell me i'm goin to hell
and that your marriage is best
I'll tell you how far I'll go
for civil disobedience's sake
By telling you how much you'll lose
tellin' me who I can take
Just to teach you
Just to teach you
Just to teach you
Forget my taxes
I won't file, keepin' my pile
of cash at home
Forget my taxes
1040 all gone
Wallet's no longer open
I cannot pay for bigotry
Giving away funding
when the bullshit runs so deep
Nothing fills the sadness
I'm not allowed to love your chest
I don't want to be shunned
But I love the look of a breast
Just to touch you
Just to touch you
Oh to touch you
Forget my taxes
I won't file, keepin' my pile
of cash at home
Forget my taxes
1040 all gone
I really care what they think
I really care what they say
But they don't know shit about this
Tax take-away
Forget my taxes
I won't file, keepin' my pile
of cash at home
Forget my taxes
1040 all gone

Great point Ms. Etheridge! And nice song to go with it. :)
Posted 11/07/2008 at 10:56:10 AMMore and more of us are WAKING UP, America. No taxation without equality; simple math.
Now the feds will need to repeal DOMA and DADT, grant us FULL equal rights (including marriage), and begin to start viewing our families - OUR FAMILIES - as the tax-paying contributing members of society we are.....well.....we USED to be!
Because if our HOMES, our FAMILIES, our very BELOVED are not acknowledged and valued as other families are legally, whatever we do outside of that home will never be acknowledged and valued legally, such as adopting children, working without discrimination, or serving openly in the military.
FAMILY FIRST. What is more important than FAMILY?
We owe the IRS absolutely NOTHING until equal. NOTHING. Get it?
This is NOT a test.
This is NOT a debate.
This is NOT a vote.
This is definitely NOT a popularity contest.
This IS justice - GAY TAX PROTEST.
