Koala's March cookies can cause your liver to fail?

Apparently the melamine milk scandal leaves no cookie unscathed. Even Koala's March, the adorable, Japanese, goo-filled crackers, are now reported to contain the substance that potentially causes liver cancer. Apparently Canada recalled the cookies, which were imported to North America from China, in September, while the FDA said they were perfectly safe. By October though, the FDA changed its mind, and issued a recall on all the Koala's March cookies that had come in since September. Translation: Americans with a soft spot for super-cute, animal-themed treats ended up eating poison for weeks.
As someone who adores these cookies, I'm particularly perturbed. Just last weekend I stood in an international grocer, deciding between the box of Koala's March and the bottle of Swedish Glogg (a spicy holiday drink that gives ex-travelers an excuse to throw back hot vodka). Lucky for me and my liver, I steered clear of the cookies. I'm also bothered that something so huggable -- ok, if you hugged them they'd probably crumble, but they really are almost too precious to eat -- could be secretly harmful. Even without the chemicals, they're apparently super high in trans fat. Koalas, why have you betrayed my sugar-loving trust? Why?

Are these cookies still tainted? My daughter loves to eat these cookies. We still have a box left with some of these adorable Koala cookies from last year. So, she was eating these cookies while they had the melamine in them? Also, are these cookies available in stores today and are they safe to eat?

When I got home I searched up Koala March and saw the recall search, I take it since there still selling them at big stores like Meijers there safe, at least the ones I got. I saw a list of the recalled ones and I did not see any 41 g of chocolate creminess goodness on it.
